Today we saw Aladdin!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been wanting to see that for a while, so this was really exciting. However, all day I’ve had Matilda stuck in my head, even after seeing Aladdin.

My favorite song from the musical is a song called Naughty. Sometimes songs take a few days before the lyrics really set in. This is a really powerful, and extremely catchy song.

The entire musical is about a little 5 year old girl that learns to stand up for herself against some adults in her life. (This is another one of those times where if you have not ever seen the movie or read Matilda, I would highly suggest it.) This song perfectly represents this theme.

The chorus is:

Just because you find that life’s not fair it
Doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bare it
If you always take it on the chin and wear it
Nothing will change.

Even if you’re little, you can do a lot, you
Mustn’t let a little thing like, ‘little’ stop you
If you sit around and let them get on top, you
Might as well be saying
You think that it’s okay
And that’s not right!
And if it’s not right!
You have to put it right!

This is just amazing to me. If you find that something isn’t right, go out and change it, and age doesn’t matter. Being a bystander is no better than doing the wrong thing. I talk a lot about how young people have incredible ideas, this song is specific to young children, but really it is for all ages. Don’t let your age or anything else determine what you can and cannot do.

Sometimes to make things right, that can mean first doing something considered to be “naughty”. That is simply because it is the opposite of what is already happening. I’m not encouraging bad behavior, and neither is this song. However, just because everyone else is doing something, that doesn’t necessarily make it right. And if it’s not right! You have to put it right!
